Fraternal Standards of Excellence

The Fraternity and Sorority community at East Carolina University upholds the principles of Academic Excellence, Community Service & Philanthropy, Leadership Development, Chapter Management, Campus and Community Engagement, and Responsible Social Conduct. The program follows a success-driven model that encourages organizations to become a larger part of the campus community rather than exist as insular groups at ECU. The program encourages co-sponsorship of events with other fraternities, sororities, and campus organizations as well as greater interaction with college faculty/staff and use of college resources. These standards establish the minimum benchmarks for adherence and encourage surpassing expectations. Additionally, the Standards of Excellence commend organizations for their adherence to community principles and outstanding contributions to the University.

Through the Fraternal Standards of Excellence process, each fraternity or sorority chapter creates a distinctive plan with proposed events and strategies for the calendar year. The chapter is then responsible for completing the goals set forth in the plan, with the support of the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office and chapter advisors.

Requirements

Chapters are required to submit information for each Standard on the Standards of Excellence Submission Form on The Pirate Experience.

This is what should be submitted for each standard with supporting documentation such as pictures, program explanations, SOPs (standard operating procedures), etc.

 Academic Achievement

  • Chapters will be asked to submit average GPA (the office can also access this information)
  • Chapters will be asked to describe academic support programs offered by the chapter
  • Chapters will be asked to provide details on academic improvement plans for members needing assistance

Community Service and Philanthropy

  • Chapters will be asked to list the community service projects that the chapter has either spearheaded or participated in during the academic year (and more specifically, detailing the activity for each semester)
  • Chapters will be asked to communicate how many total hours of service were completed by chapter members (A good way to monitor this is through Give Pulse)
  • Chapters will be asked to share how much money the chapter raised for philanthropic causes semester/year

Note: Chapters will still need to submit this information on the Community Service and Philanthropy Reporting Forms on The Pirate Experience (it’s easier to submit this information after every event than to try and do it all at the end of semester/year)

Leadership Development

  • Chapters will be asked to list conference attended by chapter members during the academic year
  • Chapters will be asked to describe training programs implemented by the chapter
  • Chapters will be asked to provide examples of leadership roles chapter members hold in other campus organizations or campus entities.

Chapter Management

  • Chapters will be asked to describe how they have adhered to FSL Office requirements (reporting forms, showing up to events, etc.), university, and national organization policies

Note: If chapters haven’t violated student code of conduct and don’t have an active case or a case that has led to disciplinary actions, the chapter has adhered to university policies.

  • Chapters will be asked to provide a summary of your chapter’s risk prevention education, policies, or training and evidence of implementing them (ex. Have a responsible drink/driving policy or plan or implementing a party age check list
  • The chapter will be asked to assess their membership retention (the office also has access to this information via Chapter information in ECU Banner’s System)

Campus and Community Engagement

  • Chapters will be asked to describe the chapter’s involvement in university events during the assessed reporting period.
  • Chapters will be asked to list collaborations had with other campus organizations
  • Chapters will be asked to detail the community outreach programs the chapter has either spearheaded or participated in

Responsible Social Conduct

  • Chapters will be asked to outline prevention programs created, implemented, or attended.
  • Chapters will be asked to describe prevention training provided to chapter members or evidence of use of campus resources (other campus programs – this could be attendance numbers, etc.)
  • Chapters will be asked to explain the initiatives in place to promote inclusive behavior and anti-discrimination or programs attended to raise awareness.
